Concrete Steps & Stairs

Concrete Steps & Stairs built by Greg

Steps get noticed when something is wrong with them. The old front stoop has pulled away from the house, a tread is crumbling at the nose, or one riser is taller than the rest and everyone catches a toe on it. Wet, mossy concrete steps are one of the easiest places to fall in a Western Washington winter, and many older homes have steps poured without a real footing that have been sinking slowly ever since. Sometimes the need is new: a new door, deck or grade change that calls for steps where there were none.

Greg Myers Construction forms and pours concrete steps, stoops and landings for homes and shops around Rainier, Yelm, Tumwater, Olympia and Lacey. Greg sets each set of steps on its own footing, ties it to the house where it should be, and lays out risers and treads so every step is the same height. Treads get a broom finish and a slight pitch to shed water, and handrails can be part of the job. Because he also builds decks, porches and covered entries, the steps can be planned together with whatever they lead up to.

How it works

How a concrete steps job works

  1. 1

    Free On-Site Estimate

Greg measures the rise from grade to door, checks the old steps and their footing, and talks about the layout you want.

  2. 2

    Demo & Footing

Old steps are removed and hauled off, then a footing is dug and poured so the new steps won't settle.

  3. 3

    Form & Pour

Riser forms are built to even heights, steel ties the steps together, and the concrete is poured and finished.

  4. 4

    Strip, Rail & Clean Up

Forms come off, edges are finished, any railing goes on, and the ground around the steps is backfilled and tidied.

Questions

Concrete Steps & Stairs FAQs

How do you make concrete steps less slippery in winter?

A broom finish on every tread, a slight pitch so water runs off instead of pooling, and a handrail on longer runs. In shady spots, keeping the steps sealed and clear of moss helps too. If rain is the bigger issue, Greg can also build a covered entry over the steps.

What decides the price of new concrete steps?

The number of steps, their width, the size of the landing, whether old steps need to be broken out and hauled away, footing depth, access and railings. Curved or flared designs take more forming. Greg prices it after a free look on site.

Can my steps be repaired, or do they need replacing?

If the steps are solid and only the surface is worn or a corner has broken off, a repair or resurfacing can work. If they've pulled away from the house, sunk or cracked through, the footing has usually failed and replacement is the lasting fix. Greg will tell you which after seeing them.

Why did my steps pull away from the house?

Usually because they were poured without a real footing, or the soil under them settled while the house foundation stayed put. A gutter or downspout dripping at the steps speeds it up. New steps on their own footing, tied in correctly, solve it.

Do concrete steps have to meet code?

Steps attached to a home need consistent risers and treads and, depending on the height, a handrail, and the county or city sets the specifics. Greg builds steps to the local requirements and pulls a permit when the job calls for one.
