Excavation & Site Prep

Excavation & Site Prep built by Greg

Raw land in Western Washington rarely comes ready to build on. There are firs and stumps to clear, a slope to cut or fill, a soggy corner where water collects every winter, and a driveway that has to carry a loaded concrete truck without sinking. Whether you are putting up a house, a shop or a barn, the pad under it has to be dug to firm ground, compacted and drained, or every trade after the excavator inherits the problem. Getting the dirt work right protects everything that gets built on top of it.

Greg Myers has 33 years of experience in construction, and excavation, foundations and concrete are part of his core work. Because he also builds the homes, barns and shops that sit on these sites, he digs with the finished building in mind: the right pad height, the right slope away from the foundation, and drainage that keeps water out of crawl spaces and off slab floors. He clears, grades, digs footings, trenches for utilities and builds gravel driveways, all under one contract with one licensed, bonded and insured contractor.

What's included

Excavation & Site Prep: what's included

  • 01

    Land clearing

Trees, brush, stumps and blackberries removed, with debris hauled off or chipped, so the site is open for layout.

  • 02

    Grading and building pads

Cut and fill to set the pad at the right height, with structural fill compacted in layers so it doesn't settle under your foundation or slab.

  • 03

    Foundation excavation

Footing trenches, crawl space digs and basement or walk-out excavation taken down to firm, undisturbed soil.

  • 04

    Gravel driveways and access roads

Stripped, rocked and compacted driveways that hold up to concrete trucks and lumber deliveries during the build and daily traffic after.

  • 05

    Drainage

French drains, curtain drains, footing drains and swales that move water away from the building and out of the low spots.

  • 06

    Utility trenching

Trenches for water lines, power conduit and other service lines, backfilled and compacted once the lines are in.

Ideas for your project

Excavation & Site Prep: what it can look like

  • Yellow excavator on a graded lot beside piles of excavated soil
  • Freshly cleared land with piled logs and stumps beside a stand of evergreen trees
  • Compact excavator clearing a wooded lot, with a pile of brush and stumps and fir trees around the edge
  • Excavator digging a house foundation hole on a cleared lot with survey stakes and dirt piles

How it works

How an excavation job works

  1. 1

    Free on-site estimate

Greg walks the property with you, looks at the trees, slope, soil and wet areas, and talks through where the building, driveway and drainage should go.

  2. 2

    Permits and staking

The clearing and grading permits your county requires are handled, and the pad, driveway and drainage paths are staked out.

  3. 3

    Clear, cut and compact

Clearing, stripping, cut and fill and compaction happen in order, with erosion control in place so the mud stays on your site.

  4. 4

    Final grade

Pad, driveway and drainage are checked for grade, and the site is left ready for the foundation, slab or building.

Questions

Excavation & Site Prep FAQs

Can you do excavation during the wet season?

Yes, but it takes more care. Clay and glacial till turn to mud fast when they are worked wet, so Greg schedules heavy grading for drier stretches when he can, protects exposed subgrade, and uses rock where the ground won't dry out. A site with a high water table may also need drainage put in before the pad is built.

How much does excavation and site prep cost?

It depends on how many trees and stumps come out, how much soil has to be cut, filled or hauled, how much rock the driveway and pad need, the drainage required, and how easy the site is to reach. Two lots of the same size can be very different jobs. Greg's on-site estimates are free.

Do I need a permit to clear or grade my land?

Often, yes. Counties regulate clearing and grading past certain amounts, and land near wetlands, streams or steep slopes can need extra review. Greg checks your county's requirements before work starts so the project doesn't stall halfway through.

What is a building pad, and why does it matter?

It is the leveled, compacted ground your foundation or slab sits on. If the pad is built on soft soil or loosely dumped fill, the building settles and cracks. Greg digs to firm ground and compacts fill in layers so the pad stays where it was built.

Do you prep acreage sites for barns and shops?

Yes. Greg builds barns, pole buildings, barndominiums and shops on rural property, and he preps those sites himself, including the access driveway and a turnaround big enough for delivery trucks.
