Decks in Tacoma

People in Tacoma call Greg for decks, composite decks, deck stairs and covered decks. He's a licensed, bonded and insured general contractor out of Rainier, about 29 miles away, and every Tacoma job starts with a free estimate.

In the older neighborhoods here, a lot of the work is remodels, additions, ADUs and decks on tight lots, built to the city's permit and inspection schedule. Whatever the reason, a new deck has to be framed right, flashed where it meets the house and built from materials that can take wet winter after wet winter.

One customer called Greg “a man of integrity.” Another wrote that he “does excellent work.”

Decks around Tacoma

Greg works all over Tacoma — near Hilltop Neighborhood, Chinatown and Wright Park and out by Frost Park and U.S. Post Office – Downtown Tacoma — and throughout Pierce County.

Tacoma is Pierce County's largest city, on Commencement Bay at the south end of Puget Sound. Tacoma is about 29 miles north of our base in Rainier, well inside our 100-mile service area.

Western Washington buildings fight water more than anything — months of rain, moss on the roof, rot wherever wood stays wet, and soils that hold moisture. A building lasts when it sits on a proper foundation with drainage around it, is wrapped and flashed right, and is built to dry out.

How it works

How your Tacoma deck job works

  1. 1

    Free on-site estimate

Greg checks the yard, the view and the grade, sees where the deck will attach, and asks how you'll use it.

  2. 2

    Design and permit

We settle size, shape, materials, stairs and railings, then get the deck permit where one is required.

  3. 3

    Footings and frame

The old deck comes off if there is one, footings are poured and the frame goes up level and solid.

  4. 4

    Decking, rails and cleanup

Decking, stairs, railings and any built-ins go on, and the yard is cleaned up before the final walkthrough.

Questions

Decks in Tacoma: FAQs

Do you do decks in Tacoma, WA?

Yes. Tacoma is about 29 miles north of our base in Rainier, well inside our 100-mile service area. Greg handles decks, composite decks, deck stairs and covered decks there, and the estimate is free.

Do I need a permit for decks in Tacoma?

It depends on the project. When one is needed, Greg pulls the permit from the City of Tacoma's building department and builds to whatever the permit and inspection require.

Do I need a permit to build a deck?

Often, yes, especially for decks attached to the house or raised well off the ground. Rules vary by county and city, so Greg checks what applies at your address and takes care of the permit paperwork.

Can you put a roof over my deck?

Yes. A covered deck lets you use it through the rainy months. We frame the roof on posts with their own footings, tie it into the house or keep it freestanding, and match the roofing to your home. The covered balcony on timber posts in Greg's photos is one example.

Wood or composite: which holds up better in Western Washington?

Both can work well. Composite resists rot and doesn't need staining, though it can get slick with moss in shady spots if it isn't cleaned. Wood costs less up front and looks natural but needs regular sealing to handle our wet winters. Either way, the framing underneath is treated wood, so we space and flash it so it can dry out between storms.

How much does a new deck cost?

Size, height off the ground, decking material, railing style, stairs and any built-ins drive most of the price. A ground-level deck on a flat yard costs less than a second-story deck with a long run of stairs. Greg gives a free estimate on site and can price wood and composite side by side.
